Moving in or out of Oak Ridge
Oak Ridge sits about 25 miles west of downtown Knoxville, mostly in Anderson County with a part in Roane County. Mitchell Moving serves Oak Ridge from our Knoxville office, with local moves inside the city, moves between Oak Ridge and Knoxville, Farragut or Clinton, and long-distance moves for people relocating to or from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Y-12 and the other employers here.
Oak Ridge homes and streets
Oak Ridge was built in the 1940s as a planned city for the Manhattan Project, and it still shows. Some of the original cemesto houses and other wartime homes are still lived in, alongside newer subdivisions. Residential streets branch off the main avenues and are named in alphabetical order, which makes them easy to find but often narrow and winding, with tight turns for a big truck.
The city sits in a valley between ridges, with Melton Hill Lake along its northeast and east sides and Watts Bar Lake to the south, so lake lots and sloped driveways are common. Tell us about the street, the driveway and the front steps when you request a quote; for tight spots we plan our smaller 16-foot truck.
Getting there
From Knoxville, our crews usually come by Pellissippi Parkway (State Route 162) or State Route 62, and the Oak Ridge Turnpike runs through the city itself. For moves between Oak Ridge and Kingston or Harriman, State Route 58 is the usual route.
Relocating for work
Many Oak Ridge moves are tied to a job, moving in to start work or moving out to a new one. For long-distance moves you get a flat-price written estimate and the same crew loads and delivers. We can also handle packing if your start date leaves no time to pack.
